A group of nine college students from Chicago and northwest Indiana was rescued after getting stranded during a hike in Kentucky over the weekend.
“Hey Mom, I’m on a cliff right now, I don’t know where we are. Search and rescue is looking for us,” was the call Caiden Kupsik made to his mother on Saturday night.
He and his friends had hiked to what’s unofficially called Indian Staircase in the Red River Gorge.
That specific hike, which is labeled as difficult by AllTrails, is not maintained by the U.S. Forest Service.
“We realized we have no clue where we are, trails just kept splitting and splitting,” Kupsik told NBC Chicago.
The group, which has hiked together before and is somewhat experienced, got lost quickly after catching the beautiful sunset view. With daylight quickly fading, they called 911 and decided to remain in one spot.
“We didn’t have a lot of water with us,” hiker Zach Salus said. “Plan B, which was to hike back, would have also probably been risky.”
Group member David Zaronais said it appeared they were heading toward a cliff.
“So at that point we were like, this doesn’t look right at all. That’s when we kind of started panicking,” Zaronais said.
Within a couple of hours, volunteers with Wolfe County Search and Rescue located the group from coordinates they texted.
“Because of the extremely dangerous nature of descending Indian Staircase after dark, our team took additional precautions. A hand line was established, with team members strategically positioned along the descent to assist and guide the group safely down the trail,” the group posted on its Facebook page.
“Once we saw them, it was just a bunch of relief everywhere from all of us,” said hiker Jonathan Castro.
The all-volunteer rescuers also applauded the hikers for remaining in one place once they realized they were lost.
“God bless them because without them we probably would have been stuck on that mountain till morning,” Kupsik said.
The group was safely down the mountain by 2 a.m. Sunday, and no one was hurt.
