A group of students became lost on a strenuous hike in Kentucky over the weekend, but their story had a happy ending after they sought help.
According to officials, rescue teams received a distress call on Saturday night at approximately 9:30 p.m. when a group of nine hikers became lost while ascending to the Indian Staircase at Red River Gorge.
Officials say the hikers were students who were visiting from northwest Indiana and the Chicago area, and they had traveled to Kentucky to take a break after recent severe weather in the Chicago area knocked out power to thousands of residents.
The students had been hoping to see sunset from the top of the Indian Staircase but became disoriented when they didn’t reach their destination by the time darkness fell, according to officials.
According to AllTrails, a hiking website and app that allows hikers to track their routes and to use navigation on routes, the trail leading to Indian Staircase is “challenging” and includes a scramble up a steep, rocky hill.
At approximately 9:30 p.m., Wolfe County Search and Rescue received a call from the hikers, and a team was dispatched to the area. Using coordinates provided by the students, the team was ultimately able to find them and safely guide them back down the trail, reaching the trailhead early Sunday morning.
The Wolfe County team praised the students for asking for assistance when it was needed, and urged other hikers to do the same to prevent tragedy from occurring in dangerous situations.
