Jay Leno is being called out over an experience that one actress says left her confused during the height of her career.
Tracee Ellis Ross recently opened up about her time on the hit sitcom Girlfriends and recalled an interaction involving Leno’s late-night show that left her confused. Despite the success of the series, she said she struggled to understand why she wasn’t being given the same opportunities as stars of other shows.
Her story came up during a recent conversation on Trevor Noah’s What Now? podcast, where she reflected on her career and the opportunities she did—and didn’t—receive during her years on television.
“No Tonight Show, no David Letterman, no Emmys. Had never been to the Emmys,” Ross told Noah. “As a matter of fact, I have a story. It was Jay Leno. And I had Girlfriends, and the comment was, ‘We love Tracee. Call us when she gets something.’ I was like, I remember thinking, ‘Get what? What else do you have to get?’ I don’t know. And it just was… ‘We love her,’ but it was not considered.”
Ross went on to explain that she remembered seeing stars from other television shows appear on Leno’s program, even when those shows weren’t performing as well as Girlfriends. One example that stuck with her was Monk, the Tony Shalhoub-led series that Ross said had only a fraction of the viewership.
“I remember, specifically, the show Monk. Do you remember that show with Tony Shalhoub? That show had a quarter of our viewership. A quarter of our viewership,” she recalled. “And I remember seeing him on the show and I was so confused. And I was like, ‘I don’t understand. Is it viewership?'”
Ross said the experience ultimately left her wondering whether racism played a role in the opportunities she was being denied, though she acknowledged that she couldn’t say for certain what was behind the decisions.
