Heavy rain, gusty winds possible across the Chicago area this weekend despite dry periods ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

After several rounds of rain, thunderstorms and a derecho earlier this week, the Chicago area won’t get a complete break from the active weather this weekend as the threat of gusty winds and heavy rain lingers.

However, there will be some periods of dry conditions.

Clouds arrived early Saturday, but weren’t expected to stick around, paving the way for favorable conditions as the Chicago Air and Water Show roars over the skies of Lake Michigan.

NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack said the story was different in central Illinois, where heavy rain led to flooding near Champaign and along Interstate 57.

In the Chicago area, rain that did arrive Saturday morning will continue to move out, leading to dry conditions for the start of the Air and Water Show.

Highs will top out in the low 80s.

However, as we go into the afternoon, scattered showers and storms may develop, but it’ll likely be hit-or-miss.

While some areas will stay dry, others will likely see scattered rain, thunderstorms and potentially severe weather.

The evening is expected to begin dry, but another round of showers and storms will arrive overnight and last through Sunday morning. Highs will dip from Saturday, only reaching the low 70s.

Much of the region will be under a marginal risk for severe weather, which the Storm Prediction Center classifies as a Level 1 out of 5. Communities south of the Chicago area will be under a slight risk, a Level 2 out of 5, as storms and potentially damaging winds arrive.

Sack explained there’s a threat for limited hail and the possibility some heavy downpours may lead to localized flooding.

The rain might exit shortly after it arrives.

Sack said not to expect completely clear skies, but higher cloud ceilings may allow the Air and Water Show to perform more upper air maneuvers. Highs are expected to reach the low-to-mid 80s on Sunday.

The dry weather continues into Monday, with no rain in the forecast for what could be the first time in more than a calendar week.

Dry conditions will prevail for much of next week, but showers and storms could arrive on Wednesday before dry conditions return.
