A pair of former Chicago Sky superstars are entering the Naimsith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame today!
Two-time MVPs Candace Parker and Elena Delle Donne will be enshrined in Springfield. Both brought the Sky to the franchise’s two Finals appearances (both against Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner’s Phoenix Mercury), in 2014 and ’21.
Delle Donne, one of the best shooters in W history, was limited to just 16 healthy regular season contests after a Lyme disease flare-up in 2014. But she propelled Chicago to its first Finals bout, though the team ultimately fell short. As a restricted free agent, the seven-time All-Star later forced a trade to the Washington Mystics — with whom she later won it all in 2019.
Parker enjoyed some of her best seasons with the Los Angeles Sparks, who drafted her with the No. 1 overall pick out of Tennessee in 2008. She brought L.A. to back-to-back Finals appearances in 2016 and ’17, claiming her first championship and a Finals MVP in 2016. The Naperville native signed with her hometown Sky as a free agent in 2021.
Following an underwhelming 16-16 regular season run during Parker’s debut year with Chicago, the Sky revved things up in the playoffs. Parker, fellow future Hall of Famer Courtney Vandersloot, and eventual Finals MVP Kahleah Copper powered the Sky to a 3-1 series win over Phoenix in the pivotal series. The Sky narrowly fell to the Connecticut Sun in the 2022 semis, and the 10-time All-WNBA honoree departed for the title-bound Las Vegas Aces the next year.

The commitment to the Sky is surprising, since she spent just two years with Chicago and enjoyed arguably her best individual pro seasons in Los Angeles. Josh Weinfuss of ESPN reports that the league’s all-time leading scorer is eyeing a potential ownership stake in the franchise at some point in the next couple of years.“Ownership is always something that’s always been on my mind,” Taurasi said. “So, thankfully, I’m in a great place where it hopefully can evolve into something. But, I don’t want to just do it and not be around. When I do it, I want to be around because I want to have an influence on where this franchise goes. And obviously being in Phoenix would be the goal.”
As the Cleveland Cavaliers look to free up cap space for free agent Hall of Fame point guard James Harden, the club is offloading the contract of his backup, Dennis Schröder. Per Shams Charania of ESPN, the German-born vet and cash are being flipped to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for Tre Mann. As Charania observes, this will free up an additional $6.8 million in cap space. Charlotte will mark Schröder’s 12th NBA club in 14 seasons. Sources inform Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com that the Hornets are set to receive $4 million from the Cavaliers in the deal.
