The Campbell sisters remember their mom, Shawnese Shannon, for her love of Prince.
When she died from cancer back in April, they gave her the Purple Rain send-off she wanted. Then, they received her remains.
“From day one I told them, ‘That’s not my mom,'” said Franquella Campbell.
They actually showed us what’s inside her urn, what they believe looks like rocks.
“When our father passed away, it gave us some peace when we received his ashes. But when we received the ashes, I didn’t feel no type of peace. It was like the same grief,” said Marshawna Campbell. “Our mother died at peace. We wanted her to stay at peace. They shook our whole world when this happened.”
They came to a community forum at Genesis Ministry in Morgan Park for families who believe they’re affected by the investigation into the South Chicago Chapel. Fifty-six bodies were recovered from the funeral home. Authorities said they were found in “various states of decomposition.”
At the forum, families could receive information and speak with civil rights attorneys from Hale Law about potential pro bono legal representation.
“So many of the families came and shared their stories. Every single one of them are horrifying. Every single one. One woman told us that she was not allowed to watch her father get put into the ground,” said Lisette Guillen, executive director and host of Case Files Chicago.
“I’ve had people contact me wanting to know if the ashes that they were given — if that’s actually their loved one or if the body that was buried is actually their loved one. Or is their loved one one of the bodies down at the morgue?” said Shawn Barnett, an attorney with Hale Law.
Those are the same questions the Campbell sisters have.
“We still haven’t gotten a call saying that the body is there or is not there from the medical examiner. So we’re just waiting around, more questions than answers,” Marshawna Campbell said.
Jacklyn Russ still has questions more than two years after her mother’s death in March of 2024. She had concerns even back then about her interactions with the funeral home.
“Mom is supposed to be at Mount Carmel Cemetery. That’s what I know of. I couldn’t see what was in her casket. They don’t let you at a Catholic cemetery, so I had to go on the assumption that she was put in the ground,” Russ said.
Barnett said the law firm could decide to represent the families and file a civil action lawsuit if they can show there was a mishandling of bodies. He urges families to cooperate with law enforcement and contact an attorney.
