The Indiana National Guard was deployed to Lake County to help with the tornado clean up and recovery as several communities continue to deal with damage, destruction, and debris from Tuesday’s severe storms.
The sound of chainsaws filled one Merrillville neighborhood on Thursday as homeowners continue with the cleanup for the second day in a row.
“This was the baddest one, the worst one,” said Mike Dabeca, Merrillville homeowner. “Trees were all over the roof.”
Dabeca lives near 61st Avenue and Vermont Street and told NBC Chicago he’s stunned by the destruction from the latest round of storms.
He and his neighbors are doing their best to get their street back in order.
“The road was shut down, all the neighbors got up and they opened the road,” said Mike Dabeca.
Tommy Kirov, who moved in across the street 22 years ago, showed NBC Chicago his property as he waits for the power to be restored.
“[Could be] one week, maybe two weeks no power,” he said. “I’m lucky because I got a generator over here to try to save a little bit of food.”
The damage is widespread from Merrillville to Munster. The Indiana National Guard is in town helping with the recovery. Around 60 members have been deployed to the region. The mission is expected to last for three days.
“I think a lot of people joined to do something like to help serve their communities so while it’s an awful situation we’re here to help,” said Capt. Jordan Baker with the Indiana National Guard.
The guardsmen are helping with tree removal and using heavy equipment to clear the roads for utility crews in Munster and Hobart.
“We’ve gotten a lot of support, people have brought water, been happy for the help,” he said. “We are only working the right of way so we are unfortunately having to turn away working in backyards.”
It could take months for the town to recover.
“This is absolutely unprecedented for this area,” said Sam Nantz, Town of Munster Director of Communications and Community Relations. “The last time they saw disaster on this level with the flooding that was back in 2008.”
