August 10-16, 2026 Paris, France – Olympic Aquatics Centre LCM (50 Meters) Meet Information Meet Central Entries Results Live Results SwimSwam Preview Index Live Stream Recaps: Prelims: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 Finals: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3We saw our second European Record fall in as many days here in Paris, as 19-year-old Johannes Liebmann of Germany established a new mark on his way to winning the European Championships title in the men’s 800m freestyle.
Racing in tonight’s final, Liebmann stopped the clock at a head-turning result of 7:37.59, a time which sliced .35 off his own former European Record of 7:37.94 put on the books at the Malmsten Stockholm Swim Open just this April. That previous benchmark hacked a remarkable 12 seconds off his old PB of 7:50.86.
Liebmann’s time also overtook the former competition record of 7:40.86, which Olympic medalist Gregorio Paltrinieri notched at the 2022 edition of these championships.
Behind Liebmann tonight was countryman and former European Record holder Sven Schwarz, who touched in 7:41.16, followed by Hungary’s Zalan Sarkany, who posted a new national record of 7:41.75 on his way to bronze.
Liebmann represents the fourth different German swimmer and the third from Schwimmclub Magdeburg to have broken the German national record in the 800m free in the past four years. He remains the 6th-fastest man in history in this event.
Below are the splits from Liebmann’s performance:
As mentioned, Sarkany of Hungary nabbed a new national record as he landed on the podium in bronze. His time of 7:41.75 deleted the 7:42.34 monster lifetime best he posted just yesterday during the heats.
Entering this competition, the 2024 Short Course World Championships bronze medalist held a career-swiftest performance of 7:48.90. That slower time was put up to place 14th out of the 800m freestyle heats at the 2024 Olympic Games, so the Hungarian hacked over six seconds off that outing this morning to clear the 7:50 barrier on just his fourth occasion yesterday.
Finally, Dimitrios Markos notched a new Greek national record of 7:43.52 to place 5th in tonight’s final.
The 24-year-old reigning European Championships silver medalist in this event previously held the NR at the 7:47.26 he logged during the heats, so he obliterated that former performance tonight.
This impressive swim comes after Markos already busted out a huge NR in the 200m freestyle yesterday. As lead-off on his nation’s men’s 4x200m free relay, Markos delivered a head-turning time of 1:44.93 as his first-ever result under the 1:45 barrier. In doing so, he handily overtook the former national record of 1:46.28 he put on the books at last year’s World Championships.
