The night saw Great Britain collect another gold thanks to Angharad Evans‘ gutsy win in the 100 breast, subsequently extending their medal table lead. After heading into the session in a tie with Neutral Athletes B, Italy racked up three minor medals compared to NAB’s two, giving the Italians sole possession of 2nd place.
Six new nations entered the medal table today, including Romania, Sweden, Ireland, Greece, Poland, and Belgium.
Hungary (Hubert Kos, 200 back), Ireland (Ellen Walshe, 400 IM), Sweden (Sarah Sjostrom, 50 fly), Germany (Johannes Liebmann, 800 free), and Romania (David Popovici, 100 free) all claimed their first golds of the meet, with each of tonight’s events producing a different winning nation.
Although no nations reaped more than one gold, there were two events where a nation had two representatives on the podium. Sweden’s Sara Junevik took bronze in the 50 fly and Sven Schwarz eked out Zalan Sarkany for the silver in the 800 free to give Germany their second silver of the meet.
Sarah Curtis set a world record in the 50 back and is now the clear favorite to claim gold tomorrow, giving Italy another opportunity to distance themselves from Neutral Athletes B.
