The BAFTA-winning actress, who starred as Archangel Michael in Good Omens, is joining the voice cast of Doctor Who – The Ninth Doctor Adventures: Dark Tides as Dr Vivian Rest, the sole survivor aboard a long-lost mapping ship that's drifted back into normal space.
Of course, Eccleston and Piper reprise their roles as the Ninth Doctor and Rose Tyler in the audio adventure, which is written by Tim Foley and will see the pair venture into deep space, where they find the long-lost mapping ship the Vesterbold. Its crew are all gone, except for one.
Mackichan said: “It was fantastic working with Chris, and I love working in the audio medium. This story’s definitely got a claustrophobic feel, where everyone’s trapped and can’t get off, and the dark forces are at play.”
Meanwhile, Piper went on to say: "This feels like very familiar Doctor Who 2005 territory to me. It reminded me of episodes like The Girl in the Fireplace, with the clockwork men. I absolutely love the character of Vivian – it’s really fun to have a sassy female character, she reminds me of Cassandra from The End of the World.”
The synopsis for the story reads: "A long-lost ship, the Vesterbold, has returned to normal space. And the Knights of Atlas seek hertreasure. But two strangers have joined their expedition – the Doctor and Rose, who warn of danger.
Eccleston and Piper starred together in Doctor Who in 2005, when Russell T Davies brought the series back to screens.
"He's a 'one man, one companion' kind of alien. We've explored him on his own at Big Finish, as a loner. But there's a resilience and a bravery and a deep empathy to Billie as Rose, that's why I do this. They complete each other."
