HENRIETTA, N.Y. — Dozens of parents, students and teachers packed a Rush-Henrietta school board meeting to voice concerns about safety following recent fights at Rush-Henrietta Senior High School.
News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski was at the meeting, where about 200 people filled the room to discuss the issue. The meeting came just a week after fights at Rush-Henrietta Senior High School were caught on camera, leading to a schoolwide lockdown and sending a student to the hospital with a head injury.
Many in attendance said fights like these have been happening for weeks and expressed disappointment in the school board’s response. Some said the short suspensions given to students involved in the fights did not feel like enough, and many students and teachers expressed safety concerns.
Safety concerns expressed
“The silence was sickening. And then we heard shouting in the hallways. More people were running, more shouting, and a strange and unknown adult was banging on the doors and screaming to be let in. This is when my heart drops because I realized that it was the drill,” said senior Mariano Albino-Toro through tears.
“You have students who are threatening to leave this district because they don’t feel safe here. How did you let that happen?” said Phyllis Wickerham, a former Rush-Henrietta school board member.
Superintendent responds
Superintendent Dr. Barbara Mullen said in a recent statement that the fight was pre-planned, and one of the people involved was not allowed in the school, having been let in by a student.
In a press conference just hours before the school board meeting, Mullen also explained why some students only received a few days of suspension.
“By state law, principals are only allowed to suspend students up to five days, in which they go through the superintendent hearing process through a third party, impartial attorney that we are provided through that BOCES process and service. The students are able to have due process, that is a process that’s similar and very much mirrors any other trial process. But in that case, the district is able to present evidence and facts towards, what we are charging,” Mullen said.
District leaders said they have increased security and made counselors available for affected students. The district is also hosting a safety forum at 6 p.m. tomorrow in the high school cafeteria.
