A local nonprofit is working to make sure people living with disabilities aren’t doubted for their abilities.
The Beautiful Lives Project works to create immersive opportunities for people with disabilities through events such as its groundbreaking fashion show, which was recently held in Oak Brook.
All the models who participated were blind or visually impaired.
Its co-founder, Bryce Weiler, is blind.
“I wanted to show that fashion can be experienced in many ways,” Weiler said. “It can be seen through someone’s eyes, or it can be touched through someone’s fingers, or felt in the heart.”
“Just because there’s something different about you, it doesn’t mean that you can’t follow your dreams,” said model Daniella Rico.
Model RoseMary Mines said she was grateful for the experience.
“It will start a new trend for young women, older women, anyone who has a disability,” she said.
High school student Aria Holtzman helped bring the project to life.
“I think it is just such a beautiful idea, a beautiful message,” Holtzman said. “I think that it’s very important to have people that are not often included in these spaces to have the opportunity to experience all these different events.”
Weiler shared a message for anyone who may be watching or listening.
“I want the viewers and the listeners to know that they can impact someone’s life on a daily basis,” Weiler said. “They can help someone who has a disability to be successful in their life.”
