Long before U2 became one of the biggest rock bands in history, the future guitar icon was just a 15-year-old student at Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin when he answered drummer Larry Mullen Jr.'s famous noticeboard advertisement seeking musicians for a new band. Evans joined alongside his older brother Dik, Paul "Bono" Hewson and Adam Clayton. After several lineup changes, the group officially became U2 in 1978.
The guitarist wasn't always known by the nickname that made him famous.
The nickname stuck, becoming one of the most recognizable stage names in rock music.
"Bono and the Edge have been the primary songwriting team in the band from day one. Bono brings the grand vision and uncanny ear for heroic hooks, and the Edge brings his sonic mastery and an eagerness to push boundaries," wrote Rolling Stone in the songwriters list, adding, "As the band's charismatic frontman, Bono may soak up a lot of the credit, but he's the first to admit how important the Edge is to their songwriting. 'Smart people know what [the Edge] does, and he doesn't care about the rest of the world,' Bono told Rolling Stone in 2005."
The milestone birthday comes at an exciting time for U2.
Producer Jacknife Leerecently described the band's renewed chemistry in the studio, saying the four members have "rediscovered their power as a group of people" after returning to writing and playing together in the same room. He added, "I think this is an important era for the band. They have not sounded so energized in decades."
