Possession ending explained: What happened to Claudia and Cudjoe? ...Middle East

News by : (Radio Times) -

A rollercoaster of a series, Sky's Possession started out with Claudia (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) travelling to Jamaica to work on an inheritance claim for Oliver (Jonny Lee Miller).

The final episode sees Claudia in her most compromised position yet, as she not only has been trapped by Oliver (who in turn has been possessed by Bel Powley's Charlotte), but must try and find Cudjoe (Sheldon Shepherd) before it's too late.

But what happens to them both? Read on for a full breakdown of the final episode of Possession.

Possession ending explained: What happened to Claudia and Cudjoe?

Tasered by Oliver and then hidden underneath the floorboards, Claudia tries to remain calm as the day breaks, calling on her ancestors and her mother to help her. We see that her dad Tom (Sean Gilder) has gone to the police station in Kingston to report his daughter missing and then learns of her previous arrest. Meanwhile, Mercy (Nadean Rawlins) tries to look for Claudia at Hope Hill, hiding out when Oliver returns early.

When he returns upstairs to attack Claudia, she surprises him by sneaking up and attacking him with a hammer. Of course, when they start talking, the spirit of Charlotte (Bel Powley) becomes clear in what Oliver is saying as he relays a story of Cudjoe "killing my baby".

We then see Charlotte nursing her baby, who is crying and appears to be distressed, but Charlotte suspects he may be cursed. Cudjoe eventually comes across the sugar cane fields, where he sees Sarah (Shantol Jackson), who is mindlessly cutting away, and knows that Charlotte has cast some kind of spell on her. He takes her machete and goes to Hope Hill to confront her but she finds him, with her baby in her arms and tells Cudjoe that she knows he is more powerful than her, pleading with him to help her son.

In the morning, Charlotte sees that her baby has died and grabs her gun. Although Cudjoe, Sarah, Betina (Safina Simpson) and the rest of the group have travelled far to get to the mountains, Charlotte has caught up to them and found them. She starts shooting and hits Cudjoe, ripping out her own hair and putting it in his mouth to perform an immortality spell on him, cursing him with having to see everyone and their families die throughout time.

After she's performed it, Betina stabs her in the back with an axe and kills her. We then see that Cudjoe's wound heals, clearly an effect of his newfound reality.

Oliver offers her some liquor to help numb the pain she's about to feel and as she takes the bottle, a montage of scenes from her time in Jamaica starts flashing before her. Seemingly channeling the energy of the country and having a brainwave of her own, she takes a big gulp, spits out the alcohol and then sets Oliver alight with a lighter she had been hiding. The tooth explodes and by doing so, it not only kills Oliver but destroys Charlotte too.

Back in Bristol, we see a funeral take place for Oliver as his ex-wife greets guests and Claudia arrives, introducing herself. She explains to Claudia that Oliver didn't seem right the last time she spoke to him, and that they'd been told he'd died by accidental death by fire.

We then flashback to Jamaica, when Claudia had rescued Cudjoe as they talk on a beach, reflecting on the whole experience. While Claudia is keen to find out if they're related, Cudjoe says there's no need and that in Jamaica and most Caribbean islands, when you try to trace back your lineage, there's often the unfortunate same story of nameless ancestors.

The final shot is of Claudia, who wakes up on a rock on the same beach she was talking to Cudjoe on, but he isn't there. Instead, she's awoken by mosquitoes that fly around her and as she looks up, she excitedly notices the shape of a hand that appears to be waving, implying that Cudjoe's spirit has finally moved on.
