The pending sale of the Padres should close sometime this month, John Seidler, the team’s control person, told Times of San Diego on Wednesday night before they lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks, 10-4, at Chase Field.

Seidler said approval from the 30 owners will be conducted by call or electronically. An MLB spokesman for commissioner Rob Manfred’s office said Thursday in response to a text message that the action had not yet been scheduled.

The Seidler family announced May 2 they had decided to sell the team to Jose Feliciano, co-founder of Clearlake Capital Group, a private equity firm, and co-owner of the English soccer club Chelsea FC, and his wife, Kwanza Jones, a singer and songwriter. The team will be sold at a record valuation of $3.9 billion.

Since then, they have been gathering support from minority owners and recently submitted financial paperwork to MLB. Feliciano and his wife are expected to have a controlling interest in the $1.7 billion range.

The MLB sale process involves vetting potential buyers through an ownership committee, which then recommends them to the commissioner’s executive council of eight owners. That council now consists of the Mets’ Steve Cohen, the Athletics’ John Fisher, the Giants’ Greg Johnson, the Guardians’ Paul Dolan, the Marlins’ Bruce Sherman, the Angels’ Arte Moreno, the Brewers’ Mark Attanasio and the Orioles’ David Rubenstein.

That group recently approved the deal, sending it on to the 30 owners for what should be a perfunctory and unanimous vote. Like any baseball matter it needs 75% of the owners to approve it.

The Seidler and O’Malley families, the heirs to former Dodger owners Walter and Peter O’Malley, purchased the team from John Moores in 2012 for $800 million. Peter Seidler, the previous control person, invested heavily in the team on the field, but died of an infection on Nov. 14, 2023, at the age of 63.

The hierarchy and family have been in flux since then until the Seidlers announced the team was for sale this past November.

The last sale of an MLB team was the Baltimore Orioles by the family of the late Peter Angelos to Rubenstein for $1.725 billion on March 27, 2024.

John Seidler, accompanied by his brother Tom, was in Phoenix Wednesday to witness the starting pitching debut of right-hander Casey Mize, John said. Mize was acquired from the Tigers at the last second of Monday’s 3 p.m. PT trade deadline. Hours earlier, the Padres also traded for starter Robbie Ray from the Giants to bolster the club’s injury-riddled starting rotation.

It wasn’t an auspicious debut for Mize, who was lifted in the fourth inning having allowed eight runs on nine hits – including a homer to D-backs third baseman Tim Tawa – along with three walks and a strike out. He threw 77 pitches and was plagued by 12 base runners.

“Not the first impression I wanted to make for my teammates and for the fans,” Mize told reporters after the game. “Pretty tough time to have the worst start of my career. I just put us in a really tough spot, didn’t give us a chance to win. So, frustrated and embarrassed by that.”

Feliciano and Jones will inherit a third-place Padres team that’s now 59-56, 10 games behind the first-place Dodgers in the National League West and two games in arrears of the Phillies and D-backs for the NL’s third and final Wild Card spot.

They will be the club’s sixth owners since the franchise expanded into the NL along with the Montreal Expos in 1969.
