Pre-Gamin’: Cubs vs Blue Jays (1:20 CT) – Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread ...Middle East

CUBS LINEUP — The Cubs lineup has dealt with more than its fair share of top-shelf pitching of late (Max Fried, Gerrit Cole, and Tarik Skubal), but they’ve got another Ace on tap today: Dylan Cease.

The Toronto right-hander has a 2.41 ERA (2.30 FIP) this season, fully realizing every ounce of his potential, including a career-best 36.2% strikeout rate. So, yes, this will be another challenging matchup. Let’s see if David Peterson and the following group can take the Blue Jays down in this makeup game at Wrigley Field.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Seiya Suzuki, DH Michael Busch, 1B Alex Bregman, 3B Ian Happ, LF Nico Hoerner, 2B Michael Conforto, RF Dansby Swanson, SS Miguel Amaya, C

Today, Pete Crow-Armstrong is moving back into center field, with Tyrone Taylor hitting the bench. PCA will be flanked by Ian Happ in left field and Michael Conforto in right, as he might against most right-handed pitchers the rest of the way.

That pushes Seiya Suzuki back to DH and keeps Pedro Ramirez on the bench.

Miguel Amaya also spells Carson Kelly behind the plate, batting ninth. Everyone else is in their usual spots around the diamond and in the order.

Toronto Blue Jays Lineup:

Myles Straw, CF Kazuma Okamoto, 1B Alejandro Kirk, C George Springer, DH Nathan Lukes, RF Ernie Clement, 3B Luis Urias, 2B Davis Schneider, LF Andres Gimenez, SS

Pitching Matchup:

Chicago Cubs: David Peterson, LHP

Save for one horrible outing against the Cardinals, it’s almost impossible to believe how good David Peterson has been for the Cubs so far this season in his other five starts: 29.1 IP, 6ER (1.84 ERA). He has been exactly what the Cubs needed at exactly the right time.

Perhaps even more encouragingly, the groundball rate that fueled the team’s desire to acquire him in the first place is finally starting to show back up over his last three starts: 54.7%.

Do that in front of this Cubs infield defense, and you’re going to have a good time.

Note: The Toronto Blue Jays (79 wRC+) have the single worst offense versus LHP in Major League Baseball this season. That should help even the odds a bit for Peterson in today’s matchup against Cease.

Toronto Blue Jays: Dylan Cease, RHP

Although he’s always been uber-talented, Dylan Cease’s walk year before free agency put some doubts in the minds of many (4.55 ERA). But the Blue Jays signed him to a massive deal nonetheless, and he’s immediately delivered: 2.41 ERA (2.30 FIP) with a career-high K-rate and fastball velocity. He is an absolute stud. And he’s coming off two very good starts:

@BOS: 9.0 IP, 1H, 0ER, 3BB, 12K vsSTL: 6.0 IP, 3H, 1ER, 3BB, 7K

The Cubs’ best chance at getting to him today might simply be by knocking him out of the game on pitch count alone. Fortunately, that may be more possible than you realize. Strikeouts tend to take a lot of pitches, sure, but walks especially so. This season, Cease is walking 10.6% of the batters he’s facing (league average is 8.9%). Meanwhile, the Cubs (10.9%) have the highest walk rate in MLB, and it’s even a touch higher vs. RHP (11.0%, still 1st in MLB).

Patience could be the name of the game.

For what it’s worth, lefties are hitting Cease better than righties, but … he’s still dominating them in an absolute sense. Just FYI.
