The press office of the European Swimming Championships also noted that the training sessions were canceled for open water swimming and high diving training.
European Aquatics added that they will “conduct a further water quality test before the next competition to ensure that all conditions continue to meet the required standards.”
Full statement from European Aquatics:
European Aquatics has just been informed that, despite recent water quality tests confirming that the River Seine meets the required standards for competition, a small amount of oil/fuel has been visually identified near the competition area. The relevant authorities are currently carrying out clean-up operations and, as a precautionary measure, today’s scheduled open water swimming training session has been canceled.
European Aquatics will conduct a further water quality test before the next competition to ensure that all conditions continue to meet the required standards. The health, safety and welfare of athletes will always remain the highest priority in the organisation of European Aquatics competitions.
At the end of July, European Aquatics President António Silva and Sports Director Apostolos Tsagkarakis met with Athletes’ Committee member and Hungarian 10km Olympic Open Water Champion Kristóf Rasovszky to discuss the safety measures that would be put in place for the open water and high diving events for the European Championships in the Seine River.
The press office of the 2026 European Swimming Championships added that the site security measures “were implemented today to ensure the remainder of the competition can proceed according to the original schedule.”
