Family pleads with driver in fatal Lynwood hit-and-run to come forward ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

A suburban family is pleading with the driver responsible for a fatal hit-and-run to come forward after a 20-year-old was killed in Lynwood Monday.

Tanisha Dennis told reporters she has always considered herself to be the responsible one in her family, and that’s why she said it was out of character for her to run out of gas just after midnight Monday morning on a dark stretch of Illinois Route 394 near Joe Orr Road near Lynwood.

At the time, Denis was with the girl she raised as her own, 20-year-old Mariyah Ford, who had just celebrated her birthday. The two decided to walk to the nearest exit with their lights on, their hazard lights on, and their cell phones out and on.

“As fast as we got out of the car, that’s as fast as he took her away from me,” Dennis said of the driver of the vehicle that struck her niece and sent her body flying into the tall weeds along the roadside. “For somebody to plow into her, she is so small, and to see her fly across the field and i had to go find her body. That’s not cool.”

Denis said she performed CPR with one hand while calling Illinois State Police with the other. When troopers arrived, they continued efforts to revive Ford before she was sent to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

In Sauk Village, where Ford’s mother and father live, the family gathered to grieve and to demand the driver turn himself in.

“We are not doing good. Mariyah was 20 years old. On her birthday she passed away. We are not doing good,” Ford’s mother Christina Dennis said.

Her father fought back tears as he pleaded for the driver to come forward.

“My daughter never deserved that. That was my only child, i am just lost right now. I am broken. Every day I hurt,” Levi Ford said.

Illinois State Police are asking anyone with information on the crash to come forward as the investigation continues.
