Coby Bryant went down during one-on-one drills at the first padded practice of camp and was carted off, visibly frustrated. The diagnosis matched the mood: per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, a hyperextended knee, a bone bruise, and a small fracture. Eight to 10 weeks. No surgery needed, at least.

Still, the math on that timeline isn’t great for the Chicago Bears. Eight to 10 weeks puts Bryant’s debut with the team somewhere around Week 3 at the earliest. In other words, the marquee free-agent addition of the offseason who came over from the Super Bowl LX champion Seattle Seahawks will miss the start of the season the Bears hoped he’d anchor.

As you might expect, Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen didn’t sugarcoat it:

“Obviously, it sucks to lose a guy like that for any particular time. And he’s a big part of what we have planned to do — and will still be a big part of what we have planned to do. But in all adversity comes also opportunity. So, it will be another opportunity for some other guys to step up.”

So who’s next?

For now, it’s Cam Lewis. Allen said Tuesday that Lewis will “focus more on the safety position now.” This will line him up next to rookie Dillon Thieneman. Lewis was the one who slid over when Bryant went down on Monday.

I like him for the job. He’s a six-year vet with 14 career starts at safety, and he started there for the Bills in the playoffs last season. The problem is what it does behind him: Lewis was already competing for the nickel spot with Kyler Gordon banged up, so moving him thins a group that didn’t have much to spare.

But it’s one padded practice. Depth charts in early August are written in sand, and this back end could look completely different by the end of camp. This is where we are today, not where we’ll end up.

“Nothing ever goes exactly how you planned, right? You have to be able to adjust,” Allen said. “You have to be able to change course when needed to. So, it’s just part of what we do, and this is just one of those things we’ll have to deal with.”

That adaptability is probably why the Bears might not stop with an in-house fix. Matt Bowen floated a couple of free-agent safeties with the split-field/box versatility Allen loves — Xavier Woods and Donovan Wilson — the kind of veterans who wouldn’t need half a season to learn the defense. The catch is the $8 million in cap space, which doesn’t leave much room and could cut into any potential defensive line help later.

Because the real issue is depth. The Bears rebuilt both safety spots this offseason, and behind Thieneman and Lewis it’s mostly undrafted rookies and journeymen. Gordon’s still out. Elijah Hicks has missed all of camp. The secondary was thin before Monday, and now it’s stretched.

“I want to see 11 frickin’ dudes on the field competing their ass off,” he said.
