Nearly a week has passed since seven tornadoes tore through the Chicago area, causing widespread damage.
The damage has led to hardships for many, including people in one south suburb where a tornado hit the same neighborhood twice.
“Monday, I came home from work and it was a disaster,” said Nicole Heard, a Hazel Crest resident.
Nearly a week ago, Hazel Crest was hit by a tornado that brought wind gusts of between 80 and 100 miles per hour, leaving some parts of the suburb unrecognizable.
“I didn’t even know the block that I lived on is the block that I lived on,” Heard explained. “The trees were down, the power lines were down.”
On Sunday, Heard and other Hazel Crest residents were receiving some much-needed help from the seniors at Harvester Place in Burr Ridge.
They bussed over with free supplies, setting up shop in the Hazel Crest Family Center parking lot.
“We wanted to come out and just provide whatever we could,” one senior said. “So just take what you like and whatever you think you need!”
Power was just restored to residents on Saturday. So, getting food and water was especially helpful after they had to throw out everything.
“It’s just terrible, it’s devastating, and we appreciate the help that’s coming today,” Heard said.
The storm that hit Hazel Crest didn’t come through once – but twice.
The Hairpin Loop Path illustrates what the south suburb faced – and why many properties faced so much damage.
“It’s like a horror show, it’s like out of a horror movie,” Heard said. “I mean there was flooding, water up to my shin. I’ve lost everything. It’s like a horror show. It’s like out of a horror movie,” Heard said. “I mean there was flooding, water up to my shin. I’ve lost everything.”
