Junior Nationals qualifier Avery Heron has announced his verbal commitment to swim and study at Penn State University beginning in the fall of 2027. He publicized the news on Instagram, writing:

A rising high school senior, the Baltimore, Maryland native trains year-round with North Baltimore Aquatic Club, where he primarily specializes in distance freestyle. Heron is coming off a 2025-26 season that saw him drop over 17 seconds in the 1650 free, nearly six seconds in the 500 free, and just over a second in the 200 free. He registered all of his current PBs at the NBAC Christmas Meet in December.
Heron’s time in the 500 free qualifies him to swim at Winter Juniors this upcoming December; he also boasts 800m (8:20.36) and 1500m (16:01.95) free times that qualify him for Summer Junior Nationals.

200 Freestyle: 1:42.34 500 Freestyle: 4:28.89 1650 Freestyle: 15:25.65A Division I program, Penn State competes in the Big Ten Conference, with the men’s team finishing ninth out of nine teams at the 2026 Big Ten Championships. Heron’s current career best in the 1650 free would have placed 19th and scored seven points at the meet, setting him up to be an immediate contributor. The 200 and 500 free, meanwhile, remain longer-term development events for him, as he’s currently a bit off the 1:35.63 and 4:21.99 needed to earn a second swim, though he still has two full seasons of training ahead before he lines up at his first conference meet.
Heron joins Brady Manser, Reid O’Connell, and Patrick O’Connor in committing to the Nittany Lions’ class of 2031 so far.
