David Coulthard has delivered a pointed verdict on Formula 1’s 2026 rules revolution, declaring that the new era has been “a bit of a disappointment” overall while insisting that the problems that have emerged were entirely predictable.
The Australian Grand Prix back in March provided the first real-world test of the sport’s radical technical overhaul, and the results immediately sparked debate. Cars were seen slowing on straights as electrical deployment ran out, with battery management suddenly becoming one of the sport’s biggest talking points.
For Coulthard, the spectacle was painfully unsurprising.
A ‘road roller’ everyone saw coming
Speaking on the Up to Speed podcast, the former Grand Prix winner described the new regulations using an analogy with a recent global sports event.
“The new regs were a bit like the halftime show at the World Cup,” he said. “It was a bit of a disappointment given that it was coming at us like a road roller.
“You know, there’s that comedy scene in a movie where the road roller’s coming and the person’s going, ‘Oh, I’m going to get run down.’ And then, kind of next scene, it’s him looking at his watch going, ‘Oh, I’m going to get run down.’”
Coulthard said the warnings from within the paddock were loud and persistent.
“So, the new regs came at us with drivers and engineers going, ‘This is not going to be good.’ [There was] pretty much silence from everyone else.
“We get to Melbourne and we go, ‘Ah, they have deceleration as they go towards certain corners.’”
Improvements in Miami but frustrations persists
The sight of cars visibly losing speed mid-straight triggered urgent changes ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, with further revisions already planned for 2028.
But mid-season improvements cannot erase the frustration, although Coulthard acknowledged that Formula 1 deserves credit for reacting quickly.
“Now, the comeback from that disappointment, I’ve got to say from Miami onwards, has been good,” he said.
“And as we discussed previously, the fact that we’ve had five different winners in the last five Grands Prix is testament to a varied season.
“But I feel that we saw this coming and nobody really was listening, and the fact they had to react to the reality in a sport that simulates the hell out of the future was a bit disappointing.”
