Neighbors are helping neighbors in south suburban Lansing just days after being hit by an EF1 tornado.
They went door to door providing food and comfort for those affected by Monday’s tornado.
Jennifer White became overwhelmed with emotion after seeing her neighbors and a group of volunteers at her door.
“Thank you so much,” she cried. “I’m sorry for crying so bad; I really felt like nobody cared.”
They stopped by her home in the Oakwood Estates neighborhood, giving her food and water. She was without power for days.
“We did lose all of our food, so this is a big help to us,” she said. “I really appreciate you.”
Liz Avila is leading the efforts to distribute food to her impacted neighbors. She’s been working with restaurants to provide free lunches for folks over the next couple of days.
“We’ve gotten a lot of support with my daughter’s fundraisers, so it’s our turn to show the community that we support them too,” she said.
Her daughter choked on a grape back in 2017 and is now left with brain damage.
“Our lives literally changed from one day to the next, so it’s not a good feeling,” she said. “We know during our time a meal goes a long way, so if we can just do a meal for people and not them having to worry about what’s my next meal going to be is a great feeling.”
Neighbors are grateful.
“It was a blessing; I just see God moving,” said neighbor Yvette Neal. “These people are so sweet, they are so sweet, they’re like angels—that’s what it feels like.”
In all Avila and the group covered four blocks, saying a little kindness goes a long way.
“I’m so proud of my community,” she said. “We’re all from Lansing, so whatever we can do we’re going to try to help and do.”
Fifteen homes have been deemed unhabitable. The village is now helping families rebuild by collecting monetary collections starting on Saturday.
As for the lunches, Avila said the distribution runs through next Tuesday. She’s also organizing a donation drive collecting water and hygiene products for her neighbors.
