Bears Left Tackle Competition: Kiran Amegadjie Gets 1st Team Reps, Braxton Jones Gets Best Quote ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

We are starting to learn about how important a healthy Braxton Jones could be to the Chicago Bears’ offensive line.

This passage from Friday’s Bears training camp notes from ESPN’s Courtney Cronin certainly grabbed my attention:

Jones attributes part of his struggles to rehabbing an ankle injury that put him behind the 8-ball throughout the 2025 offseason. He didn’t trust that his ankle would hold up and found himself second-guessing his abilities, which is no longer the case now that he has a clean bill of health.

“Oh, night and day,” Jones said regarding how much better he’s feeling physically. “Last year I mentally wanted to be there but I physically was not. That battle, a lot of people would never understand. I’m so blessed for that battle and I just thank God, genuinely, for showing me his light.”

That quote from Braxton Jones is one of the most important things I’ve heard from anyone who has spoken at training camp this week.

A healthy Braxton Jones could be a difference-maker on the Bears’ offensive line. Last year, Jones wasn’t as healthy as he needed to be to play to his full potential. Ultimately, it cost him his starting job. Later in the year, another injury put him on injured reserve, ending his season early. It was just one of those years where everything that could go wrong did for Jones. But here we are in August 2026, and Jones appears well-positioned to win the starting job protecting quarterback Caleb Williams’ blindside.

Who’s Battling Braxton Jones For the Starting LT Gig?

With that being said, it’s not as if Jones is a lock to get the gig. The competition at Bears camp is real. And at left tackle, it figures to be intense.

The Tribune reports that Kiran Amegadjie “saw the most action” with the first-team offense. The duo of Brad Biggs and Sean Hammond also add that Jedrick Wills Jr. found some work with the first unit. As for Jones, he was working with the second- and third-team offensive units. This isn’t a cause for concern, mind you. It has been clear since the outset of camp that the Bears would give first-team looks to Jones and Wills. However, the inclusion of Amegadjie is a bit of a curveball.

After last year’s competition, I wasn’t sure Amegadjie would get another shot at left tackle. And I thought Theo Benedet played well enough there in a pinch to merit a spot in the competition to start at left tackle. However, reports from camp suggest that Benedet has worked exclusively at right tackle. This isn’t to say that he won’t see time at left tackle. Remember, Benedet was a late inclusion in the 2025 left tackle race. Perhaps this is being done to get him more work on the other side and to give Amegadjie a longer look than he received last year.

BRAXTON JONES AND THE 2026 CHICAGO BEARS OFFENSIVE LINEMEN

Mind you, none of this is a surprise to Braxton Jones. He knows what competition is all about.

“I assumed that it would be like that,” Jones said, via ESPN. “Obviously they left it at it is a competition at the end of the day. Regardless of that, wherever we’re put, ones, twos, threes, you’ve got to go perform and do your thing.”

If Jones does his thing the way we’ve seen in the past, it might not be long until he has the starting left tackle job wrapped up. But because we’re so early in the race, I would say that it is too early to make a call.
