The heat sheet is out for the Friday night finals session of the 2026 U.S. Nationals and Indiana Swim Club’s Josh Matheny, who is on the Pan Pacs roster in two weeks, has scratched the men’s 100 breaststroke final.
Matheny originally tied for 5th in the event, stopping the clock in 1:00.32 to finish exactly even with Finnley Conklin and Nate Germonprez.
His swim was a little more than a second off his lifetime best of 59.15, which he set at the World Championships last summer.
Last night’s 50 breaststroke champion Watson Nguyen had a massive race in the final, swimming 26.65 to take about a second off his pre-meet best of 27.49 and upset Michael Andrew for the individual event win.
He originally finished 9th in the 100 breaststroke prelims, and would have been the top seed of the consolation final with his 1:00.47. This was about seven tenths faster than his previous best of 1:01.22, which he set in September of 2023.
With Matheny’s scratch, Nguyen moves into the ‘A’ final and will be racing for his 2nd national title of the week from lane eight.
