Last weekend, the 2026 European Open Water Cup got underway in the charming Swiss lakeside village of Tenero. After the first leg, scheduled for Cyprus in April, was cancelled, the first round of medals and an early lead in the Cup rankings was up for grabs.
World Champion Dario Verani and 2025 World Junior Cup Champion Louna Kasvio emerged as 10k victors in the first stop.
Verani, the 31-year-old with a world title in the 25k from 2022, said the conditions in Switzerland were ideal. His winning time of 1:47:19.51 reflects this. Verani’s strategy was to stay near the top of the pack and then sprint in through the final of six laps. The strategy paid off, as he won by a respectable 6.51 seconds ahead of 19-year-old Pole Bartosz Kapala. It marks the biggest podium finish of the youngster’s career. Estonia’s Jaan Pasko rounded out the men’s podium.
Verani is on a bit of a hot streak. At the 2026 Pan Pacific Championships, he similarly sprinted in on the last lap to take the bronze medal.
On the women’s side, 20-year-old Finnish record holder Louna Kasvio proved her grit in the face of a uber-close finish. She went stroke for stroke with the more experienced Klaudia Tarasiewicz of Poland and touched the wall .06 ahead of her. In a margin that is lower than the typically allotted open water clock of .1, Kasvio got her first big senior win. Tarasiewicz, 22 years of age and a key player in last year’s European Cup, settles for silver. Italy picked up a second podium spot courtesy of Iris Menchini reaping third place.
Two stops remain on the European Open Water Cup: a race in Razanac, Croatia on September 26 followed by a finale in Barcelona on October 3rd. Monaco’s Lisa Pou and Italy’s Fabio Dalu won last year’s overall Cup.
