The funny thing about training camp is that almost every time you talk about something good happening, it’s a double-edged sword. Take today’s top Bears highlight, for example. Caleb Williams and Kalif Raymond hooked up for a 54-yard touchdown. My first thought is: Awesome! My second (and almost immediately after the first): who got burnt?
In this instance, it was Tyrique Stevenson, who was “several steps behind Raymond,” according to CHGO’s Adam Jahns. I love Williams nailing Raymond in stride for a 54-yard touchdown. Love it for Williams (vision, ball accuracy). Love it for Raymond (reaffirming the familiarity with Johnson’s designs; depth is important). Don’t love it for Stevenson, whose biggest shortcoming is his footspeed in coverage. Perception is everything, I guess. FOX 32’s Devan Kaney (via X) said that Williams completed the majority of his passes in Chicago’s roughly 110–minute practice today. There’s no official count, but I would imagine “majority” would fall closer to where Ben Johnson wants Williams to be on the completion rate spectrum this season. Overall, the vibes out of Halas Hall are largely positive when it comes to Caleb Williams and the offense, mostly because the offense’s success is driven by Williams’ continued development. Adam Jahns shared this in his camp notebook at CHGO for context: “Progress and development of Williams is still apparent. If Jahns’ eyes are correct, that’s very much the case in the early going. “The days of saying and detailing how the defense is ahead of the offense early in camp appear to be over under coach Ben Johnson,” Jahns wrote in his notebook today. That’s good, because everything about the offense taking the next step hinges on Williams’ next step, which is why I ranked him at the top of our “20 Most Important Bears of 2026” list. Speaking of early camp trends, Luther Burden III continues to stand out. Multiple folks on the beat reported that he dominated the day again and had the lion’s share of the targets. “Massive day,” was how FOX 32’s Devan Kaney summarized Burden’s morning, and “dangerous” was the adjective used by WGN’s Kaitlin Sharkey. I’ve spilled plenty of virtual ink on Burden, so I don’t need to say much about the rave reviews on him in the early going at camp. I don’t have a scorecard going for who is taking the bulk of the reps in that spot vacated by the injured Kyler Gordon, but if I did, Lewis and Jones would probably be at the top of it. We’ll continue to monitor how that shakes out. Also in Hammond’s notes: Rookie tight end Sam Roush spent significant time working with the first team offense today. That’s fun. Roush won’t be competing for Colston Loveland’s (or Cole Kmet’s) job anytime soon, but getting reps with the first team offense is a good way to expedite his familiarity with Johnson’s offense. Another rookie got some shine today: “Rookie defensive tackle Jordan van den Berg provided a highlight for the defense. He quickly skirted past right tackle Mason Murphy, an undrafted rookie, to reach running back Coleman Bennett in the backfield for what would have been a tackle for loss with live contact.
