PITTSFORD, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills are back at St. John Fisher University for their 25th training camp, bucking a growing NFL trend.
The Bills in the summer has become a staple at St. John Fisher. Autographs, dorms, training camp. It used to be that way all around the NFL as teams would leave their homebase and pack up for another city for the weeks leading into the preseason. Now, the Bills are just one of six teams to do so.
“Joe [Brady] and I talked about that pretty quick after he was named the head coach of what will be our plan. And I love coming up here. And I was glad that he saw it the same,” Bills general manager Brandon Beane said.
Brandon Beane and Joe Brady are in agreement, Pittsford can be home for the Bills from late July to early August. Admittedly though, there are pros and cons.
For quarterback Josh Allen, who welcomed his first child in early April, it means time away from his wife and daughter. But he said that makes getting the most out of his time more important.
“I miss my family. But, to be here with the guys, we’re going to work, and we do have set of goals in mind that we want to accomplish. And in order to do that, there are sacrifices that you have to make,” Allen said.
This year’s camp is shorter than last season’s, dropping from 10 practices to seven. Brady said that has more to do with their schedule heading into their first preseason game as he wants to use the week leading up to Buffalo’s August 15 preseason game as a way to plan how he’ll approach regular season games come September.
“I love getting away, but I also want to make sure there’s a lot of different nuances this year with regards to us getting back into the stadium and just getting to that flow of hey, the first time we’re there isn’t the preseason game, that type of thing,” Brady said.
The Bills held their first practice Thursday morning. They’ll continue with an 8:30 a.m. practice on Thursday. Camp at Fisher continues until August 7.
