Six transfers on Man Utd’s radar – and the latest on Joshua Zirkzee ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

Joshua Zirkzee’s Manchester United struggles could be about to end as three Italian clubs consider making a move for the striker.

The i Paper has been told that while United are not actively looking to sell the 25-year-old, the club are open to offers for a player who has failed to make an impact in England.

Sources in Italy indicated that Juventus, Roma and Como are all keen on bringing the former Bologna forward back to Serie A.

All three are understood to be lining up loan offers with an option or obligation to buy included in the deal. United would prefer a straight sale.

Zirkzee is a popular figure in the dressing room, with the Netherlands international enjoying a close relationship with captain Bruno Fernandes.

He has shown flashes of his ability on occasion, such as his stunning solo goal in United’s last pre-season friendly in Norway, but he has yet to hold down a first-team spot.

Roma are long-term admirers of the Dutchman and looked at signing Zirkzee in January.

Juventus are frontrunners, having expressed the strongest interest.

Como are the surprise package but can offer Champions League football.

Can United afford to lose him?

Funds are clearly tight at Old Trafford – that much is clear from the club’s search for a marquee midfielder.

From the outset, co-owner Ineos has been keen to remain sensible in its transfer strategy, ensuring the club can learn lessons from years of market wastage.

With a top midfielder a priority as well as a left-back, finding the funds to bring in another striker could be difficult.

Benjamin Sesko is still injured and may miss the start of the season, so another central option in the squad is a must.

The returning Marcus Rashford could play there, as could Bryan Mbeumo or Matheus Cunha.

But all three are better out wide.

Sources added that should Zirkzee leave, United would look to replace him with whatever funds are left over from their midfield and full-back search.

Who comes in?

There are no targets being actively pursued at this stage, not while Zirkzee is not close enough to the exit door.

If he does leave, one source added United could look for an experienced striker to come in on a short-term basis, similar to the role Wout Weghorst fulfilled during his loan spell a few years ago.

Danny Welbeck would have been the perfect option, but the United academy graduate is expected to finalise his move to Chelsea in the coming days.

One potential option that has been mentioned is former Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, who is a free agent amid interest from Barcelona.

Ollie Watkins is another striker United have been monitoring for a while, though Aston Villa are unlikely to sell for anything like the sort of fee the Red Devils would be willing to pay.

How is the rest of the squad rebuild going?

Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba remains firmly on the club’s radar (Photo: Getty)

Supporters are starting to get a little restless with the rest of the rebuild.

While two midfielders have already been brought in, neither Youri Tielemans nor Andre Santos are the marquee names fans were hoping for to fill the void left by Casemiro in the centre of the park.

Elliot Anderson, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali were all too expensive and moved elsewhere, while a pursuit of Aurelien Tchouameni looks beyond the club’s reach at this stage.

That could change the later we get into the window, and the more desperate United get.

Another midfielder will almost certainly be signed but it remains to be seen how much the club are willing to spend.

Roma’s Manu Kone and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba are the preferred options currently, as executives feel both could be available at a much more reasonable price.

If Bournemouth reluctantly sell Alex Scott, it is thought that only Chelsea will match their valuation.

Another Cherries midfielder, Tyler Adams, could be another more attainable target to pursue.

In terms of a left-back, Lewis Hall is understood to be of real interest, and a source close to the player has told The i Paper that he would be keen to move to Old Trafford. No talks have taken place as yet.
