The decade was packed with memorable singer-songwriters, but one particular country-folk icon delivered an infectious, sun-soaked track that soared all the way into the Billboard Top 5. Decades after Jonathan Edwards' signature anthem "Sunshine" defined an era of feel-good music, the legendary hitmaker is officially celebrating his 80th birthday, and the story behind his rise is just as remarkable as the song itself.
He was born in Minnesota and raised in Virginia. As a young child, he was sent to military school for an admitted "behavioral problem."
It was there, he told the Syracuse New Times, "the kid next door had a guitar. I had never seen one up close and was 14 or 15 years old."
After a stint with an acoustic trio, Edwards went out on his own and created the song that would change his life. He explained, "Around 1969 to 1970, I went out on my own after my electric college band. I liked the sound of acoustic guitars, instruments better than loud electric. So I went out on my own, wrote my own songs and boom!"
Edwards added, "I was humbled that a little song I wrote in five minutes has had meaning for people all these 50 years. And a cool thing about this song: It’s starting to dawn on people that it’s a pretty angry little war protest song."
"'How much does it cost? I'll buy it? Time is all we've lost. I'll try it. He can't even run his own life, I'll be damned if he'll run mine.' That just came out as I was playing the song for these people," Edwards added.
