ComEd warned customers Tuesday that its cleanup efforts may take time as the company grapples with a severe weather season that has well surpassed what has been seen in recent years.
“We know many customers who remain without power following Monday’s storms are frustrated – and we get it,” the company wrote in a notice to customers Tuesday. “The reality is that northern Illinois is experiencing a level of severe weather unlike what we’ve seen in recent years. In fact, our service area has already experienced more storms this year than in all of 2025, with five months remaining in the year.”
According to ComEd, the storms hitting the region are “becoming more frequent, more powerful and more destructive,” making it even more challenging for crews to restore power.
At the height of the storms, outages reached more than 530,000 across the Chicago area Monday. By Tuesday morning, just over half had been restored, still leaving nearly a quarter million without power.
ComEd noted areas hit hardest by the outages were Maywood, Crestwood, Bolingbrook, University Park, Chicago Heights, Glen Ellyn, Skokie, Waukegan and Libertyville.
“When storms cause this level of damage across dozens of communities at the same time, restoration becomes significantly more complex,” the company said. “Crews must first assess damage, clear hazards and rebuild damaged infrastructure before power can be safely restored. In some locations, roads must be cleared of downed trees before crews can even access damaged equipment.”
Officials said they estimate about 80% of homes to be restored by 12 p.m. Wednesday, but many may still not have power through 10 p.m. Friday.
Meanwhile, National Weather Service crews are expected to be out assessing damage from the storms Tuesday to determine if any tornadoes touched and down and where.
