1967 No.1 Was Turned Down by Over 12 Other Artists for Being Too ‘Simple' ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

The track was written by Garry Bonner and drummer Alan Gordon. The latter put together the melody while working with his first band, The Magicians, inspired by the constant tuning of guitarist Allan "Jake" Jacobs during the band's concerts. Jacobs had no interest in making the song, because he thought it was too easy.

Gordon played "Happy Together" to various record companies and bands, but was turned down by numerous artists. They all had the same complaint: the song was too basic and sounded like something made on a whim. Acts that turned the song down included the Happenings, the Vogues, and the Tokens, per Rebeat. Mixdown suggests 12 artists nixed the now iconic rock song.

Lead singer Howard Kaylan speaks about discovering "Happy Together" in his autobiography, explaining how the band spent a significant amount of time listening to demos submitted by publishing companies.

Kaylan recalled that the demo consisted of "one guy strumming an acoustic guitar while the other sings in a bizarre falsetto to get a semblance of rhythm going. Their voices were abysmal". Backing singer Mark Volman agreed with his bandmate, calling the demo "amateurish, lacking any kind of professional performance".

Luckily, the song was a hit for The Turtles once they had transformed it. It peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming the band's first and only chart-topper. It was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2007. Despite no one wanting to record "Happy Together," it was one of the most performed songs in the United States in the 20th century.
