Lawrence’s foray into the world of pop music almost didn’t happen. Russell didn’t originally write the song for her, and only had her record it when Cher's manager/husband Sonny Bonoturned it down on Cher's behalf.
Russell then told Lawrence that if she loved it so much, she should record a demo. She did, and then producer Snuff Garrett told her that he would show it to Liza Minnelli.
Russell refused to rewrite the song, so Garrett said, “Let’s just go in the studio and do it with Vicki.”
