A year before the hit, the members of the British glam rock band, lead singer Brian Connolly, bassist Steve Priest, guitarist Andy Scott and drummer Mick Tucker, were at their wits' end.
Sweet found more creative freedom when writing some of their singles, and in Germany, they had earned a reputation as serious hard rockers. Their 1974 album Sweet Fanny Adams even briefly outsold Deep Purple's Burn.
The band grew increasingly frustrated with the material they were being handed, especially as they slipped down the priority list behind labelmates like Suzi Quatro and Mud. Their songwriters were also spending more and more time away in California, adding to the strain.
The song that would ultimately free Sweet had already existed as an album track on Desolation Boulevard, the follow-up to Sweet Fanny Adams. Their label, RCA, saw its potential, having originally been recorded, as Scott put it, "in the style of a live band."
“Just before Christmas [1974],” Scott recalled, “everybody just happened to be at my house when the managing director of RCA called to say: ‘We’re not getting the right answers from Mike and Nicky, but we really believe that ‘Fox On The Run’ could be a hit.’”
"Fox on the Run" was credited to the full band, but Scott was the driving force behind the song. The lyrics were about an unnamed groupie, as heard in the line, "You talk about just every band / But the names you drop are second-hand."
Scott, acting as a "budding producer," took charge of the recording session, although the label still credited the song as "Produced by Sweet."
RCA quickly released the reworked version of "Fox on the Run" without telling Chinn and Chapman, who flew back to England as soon as they found out.
"Fox on the Run" hit No. 1 in several countries, including Australia, Germany, and South Africa. It reached No. 2 in the U.K. and No. 5 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
Over the years, "Fox on the Run" has been covered by artists including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Girlschool, Sweet Savage and the Scorpions.
