Verstappen surprised by Hungary podium, but ‘worked hard for it’ ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

Max Verstappen arrived at the Hungarian Grand Prix expecting a difficult afternoon, and yet he left Budapest with a hard-earned second-place finish.

And it was just another reminder that even when Red Bull’s performance is lacking, the Dutchman’s ability to extract a result remains a formidable weapon.

The four-time world champion admitted he was surprised to find himself standing on the podium after a challenging weekend in which the RB22 struggled for balance and competitiveness around the tight Hungaroring.

Yet after a determined drive, a crucial overtaking move and some clever strategic calls, Verstappen secured a result that looked out of reach only hours earlier.

A survival mission turns into a podium finish

Verstappen’s race was built around damage limitation. After making a solid start and keeping himself in contention through the opening corners, the Dutchman found himself battling Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc as tyre strategy began to reshape the order.

Hamilton’s early switch to hard tyres created a strategic battle, but Verstappen responded by producing one of the defining moments of the race.

After Ferrari undercut Red Bull during the first pit cycle, Hamilton emerged ahead of Verstappen on the road. The Red Bull driver wasted little time, launching a decisive move into Turn 1 to reclaim the position.

The aggressive pass proved critical, allowing Verstappen to stay ahead and ultimately shape the rest of his race.

Reflecting on a result that exceeded his expectations, Verstappen admitted the podium was far from guaranteed.

"I didn't expect to be on the podium today, but we worked hard for it," Verstappen explained.

"I think the start was decent, you know, to get through Turns 1 and 2, and then after the first stop to get back ahead of Lewis under braking into Turn 1, I was just trying to survive on the compounds, trying to make the right calls with the strategy as well.

"So I am very happy to be second here."

With tyre management becoming a major challenge, Verstappen was forced into a defensive race rather than the attacking performances that have become his trademark.

The late Virtual Safety Car caused by Oscar Piastri’s retirement added another strategic twist, with Hamilton choosing to pit while Verstappen stayed out to preserve track position.

The gamble paid off, as Verstappen maintained second place to the flag.

Verstappen seizes his one opportunity

The battle with Hamilton was one of the biggest turning points of Verstappen’s afternoon. Knowing overtaking opportunities would be limited, the Red Bull driver recognized that he had to make the move count when the chance appeared.

"I saw the opportunity as my only one, and yeah, I just went for it," he said of the Hamilton move.

Verstappen’s confidence under braking proved decisive, with the Dutchman able to complete the pass cleanly and avoid the kind of contact that had defined previous clashes with Hamilton at the same corner.

"We're good on the brakes, so that helped, so it was all under control,” he added.

While Red Bull’s Hungarian weekend highlighted the struggles still facing the team, Verstappen’s recovery drive offered another demonstration of his ability to maximize difficult circumstances.

A race that began as a fight for survival ended with a second-place trophy—and a result even the champion himself did not see coming.
