Having had the women’s 400 free and 200 free on days 1 and 2, we now have the women’s 100 free to look forward to with the Australian trio of Mollie O’Callaghan, Meg Harris, and Shayna Jack. Jack and Harris swam on the mixed 4×100 free relay last night, but O’Callaghan joined them on the women’s 4×100 free relay on the first day as all three swam between 53.07 and 52.64.
O’Callaghan would have been the favorite after swimming a season best 52.33 at Australian Trials, but she was a couple of seconds slower in the 200 last night than she was at the start of June and is suffering from a back injury which looks to be affecting her more here than it was at those Trials last month.
Jack may see this as a chance to win a Commonwealth title in her final meet before retirement, but all three should comfortably progress this morning. Jack and Harris split 52.42 and 52.03, respectively, on the mixed 4×100 free relay last night as Australia won in a Games record of 3:19.36.
Eva Okaro and Evelyn Davis went 1-2 at the Aquatics GB Championships in April and are the #4 and #5 seeds here. Davis got the better of Okaro on the leadoff leg of the women’s 4×100 free relay on night 1, the Scot clocking 54.32 to her English counterpart’s 54.50.
Theodora Taylor set a Welsh record of 54.14 on that same leadoff leg, second-fastest in the field, and is the #7 seed this morning. She also split a sizzling 52.63 on the mixed 4×100 free relay last night, so figures to be even faster today.
Aimee Canny will be one to keep an eye out for, entered in 56.08 and in lane 1 of the first circle-seeded heat, but owning a season best of 54.27 and having posted a 54.46 leadoff on the relay two days ago.
The men’s 50 breast looks like one of the races of the meet, with the top four swimmers separated by just 0.03 seconds. Sam Williamson leads the way with his 26.61 from Australian Trials, just ahead of South African pair Michael Houlie (26.63) and Chris Smith (26.64), and world record holder Adam Peaty (26.64).
Houlie has already broken the Games record in this event, blasting out to a 26.38 on his opening 50 in the semi-finals of the 100 breast on the first day of competition. He was slightly slower last night, touching in 26.57 as he placed 7th in 1:00.35.
Williamson may have the edge over his competitors after winning the 100 breast last night in 59.17 ahead of Peaty and Filip Nowacki, who is the #6 seed in 27.10. Ronan Wantenaar of Namibia, who swam his lifetime best of 26.85 at the World Championships last summer and only just missed making the final, did miss the semi-finals in the 100 breast, but the 50 is his favored distance.
Pieter Coetze and Ollie Morgan will do battle again in the 200 back after going 1-2 in the 50 back last night. They are the top two seeds in 1:53.36 and 1:55.85, with 2021 Olympic bronze medalist Luke Greenbank ranking 3rd in 1:56.01.
Henry Allan of Australia, Matt Ward of Scotland, and Jack Skerry of England will also hope to swim in their second backstroke final in two days. Se-Bom Lee has his first swim of the meet after setting a new lifetime best of 1:56.75 at Australian Trials last month.
All three medalists from the 50 fly return to the women’s 100 fly, with Alex Perkins the top seed by more than a second. Scotland’s Keanna MacInnes will be in action for the first time this week as the #3 seed after setting a new Scottish record of 57.57 at the Aquatics GB Championships in April.
Bronze medalist Hazel Ouwehand is also in the field, as is Perkins’ teammate Brittany Castelluzzo. Ciara Schlosshan will swim next to her teammate Macinnes in the first of the circle-seeded heats, which should be one of the loudest of the morning.
We also have the first heat in the women’s 1500 free in this session, with the second heat held in this evening’s finals session. Kyra Rabess of the Cayman Islands is the fastest swimmer this morning in 17:05.02, four seconds ahead of Singapore’s En Xi Sarah Sim.
Timothy Hodge and Barry McClements lead the way in the men’s S9 100 back. McClements won bronze four years ago, while Hodge won gold in a Games record of 1:01.88.
The women’s event this year moves up a category from S8 to S9, but 2022 champion and 2024 Olympic gold medalist Alice Tai is still the top seed despite that move. Toni Shaw, who won bronze in Birmingham, will swim in lane six in the first heat.
The men’s 4×200 free is the final event of the morning, led by top seed Australia. England and Canada are entered on either side in the final heat, although Canada’s participation will be in question after they left empty lanes in two of the three relays swum so far. They don’t appear to have four 200 freestylers on their team, so they would not be a surprising absence.
Scotland and Wales will do battle in the first heat, with the result likely to give one team an edge as they seek a medal in tonight’s final.
