Berlin’s annual Christopher Street Day Pride parade was cancelled after a white car drove into crowds, killing one and leaving several others with life-threatening injuries.
An intensive manhunt is underway, with police searching for one or more suspects after witnesses gave differing accounts of the number of people involved in the attack.
Locals and attendees were asked to avoid Tiergarten park, close to Brandenburg Gate, while emergency services treated those at the scene.
German media reported Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the “horrific act” and was being “kept constantly informed” about developments.

The attack occurred on the edge of Tiergarten park along Ahornsteig road, near Berlin’s famous Brandenburg Gate.
Authorities and local media have reported a white car sped into a crowd of people shortly before 10pm, local time.
Several people were struck, with Police Berlin spokesperson Florian Nath confirming “numerous” attendees were injured.
Some were being resuscitated at the scene, he added.
Police later said one person had died and at least 16 others were injured, although the death toll could climb over the coming hours.
“Several people are severely injured, and we don’t know if all will survive the night,” Nath warned in an update.
Authorities also revealed some witnesses had reported a number of people were stabbed during the attack, with investigators working to corroborate those claims.
Manhunt underway
Berlin Police have launched a manhunt to locate one or more suspects, but have released no other information about who may have been behind the attack.
A “major police operation” is underway in Tiergarten park as authorities work to investigate the incident.
Witnesses at the scene have given differing accounts of the number of people involved in the attack, while authorities have also yet to identify any information on a potential motive.
According to Nath, authorities were not immediately able to identify the vehicle used in the attack as it had been “so damaged by the force and the impact”.
Agence France Presse reported the car was discovered abandoned in Tiergarten park, with its driver and any occupants having fled, some time after the attack occurred.
It was also not clear how the vehicle had entered the park as roads had been closed off to traffic ahead of the march.

Berlin’s annual Christopher Street Day Pride parade is the largest LGBTQ+ march in Germany and attracts hundreds of thousands of people.
Attendees had been due to march from their starting point on the corner of Leipzig street and Spittelmarkt to Berlin’s Victory Column before finishing in front of the Brandenburg Gate.
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner said the city’s freedom had been “attacked in the most horrific way”.
“After a peaceful and vibrant Christopher Street Day parade, the gathering for a tolerant and peaceful Berlin was brutally attacked,” he wrote in a social media post.
“Berlin is the city of freedom – and our freedom has been attacked in the most horrific way today.
“My thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends.”
Authorities have not said whether they believe the attack was deliberately targeting the city’s LGBTQ+ community.
Germany sees another car attack
Saturday’s attack is the latest in a handful of instances where perpetrators have weaponised cars to target crowds in Germany.
In 2016 Islamic State claimed responsibility for an attack on a Christmas market in Berlin which killed 12 people and wounded 56 others.
More recently, in December 2024, a Christmas market in Magdeburg was targeted by a 50-year-old with anti-Islamic views in an attack which left six people dead and over 300 injured.
Another attack, this time in Leipzig, saw two people killed and six injured earlier this year.
