World Record – 56.88, Adam Peaty (GBR), 2019 Commonwealth Record – 56.88, Adam Peaty (GBR), 2019 Commonwealth Games Record – 58.59, Adam Peaty (ENG), 2018 2022 Champion – James Wilby (ENG), 59.25GOLD – Sam Williamson (AUS), 59.17 SILVER – Filip Nowacki (JEY), 59.34 BRONZE – Adam Ramsay-Peaty (ENG) – 59.65
Filip Nowacki had already established himself as a star over the last 12 months, but in his first senior international meet he made some history for the small island of Jersey.
He roared home on the second 50 of the 100 breast to overtake mentor Adam Ramsay-Peaty, touching in 59.34 to win silver behind Sam Williamson of Australia.
Only four other athletes have previously won a Commonwealth medal for Jersey. The last of those, shooter Colin Mallett’s gold medal, came at the 1990 Auckland Games. He also won a team bronze alongside his father Cliff that year.
There have been Jersey athletes since to win medals competing for other nations. Serena Guthrie was part of England’s gold medal-winning netball team in 2018, which overcame Australia in the final 52-51, and Simon Militis won 200 back bronze for England in 2002.
Nowacki has a great chance to become only the Island’s second-ever athlete to win multiple medals later this week in the 200 breast. He is the top seed in 2:07.32, the time he swam to win World Junior gold last summer, and leads the entrants by 1.60 seconds.
MIXED 4×100 FREESTYLE RELAY – FINAL
World Record: 3:18.48 – USA (Alexy, Sammon, Douglass, Huske), 2025 Commonwealth Record: 3:18.83 – Australia (Cartwright, Chalmers, Jack, O’Callaghan), 2023 Commonwealth Games Record: 3:21.18 – Australia (Yang, Chalmers, O’Callaghan, McKeon), 2022 2022 Champion: Australia (Yang, Chalmers, O’Callaghan, McKeon) – 3:21.18GOLD – Australia, 3:19.36, *Commonwealth Games Record* SILVER – England, 3:23.91 BRONZE – Wales, 3:24.33
Nowacki’s medal was not the only historic one tonight. Wales won just the second Commonwealth relay medal in their history, adding to the women’s 4×100 medley relay bronze they won in 2018.
Matt Richards (47.62), Dan Jones (49.17), Bex Sutton (54.91), and Theodora Taylor (52.63) were the quartet tonight who delivered the hardware, with Taylor’s anchor leg proving key as she overtook New Zealand’s Erika Fairweather and Scotland’s Katie Shanahan.
She had set a Welsh record of 54.14 in the 100 free on the leadoff of the women’s 4×100 free relay last night, and her swim tonight indicates that she has the potential to take that into the 53s. Taylor’s split was the seventh fastest split ever by a British women.
She also has a chance at the British 17-year-olds record, which is currently set at the 53.61 Freya Anderson clocked in the summer of 2018. Taylor’s split tonight may also be the fastest junior 100 free split in history. Olivia Wunsch was 52.70 at the 2023 World Junior Championships for Australia and Rylee Erisman threw down a 52.75 at the 2025 edition.
Richards was just off his British record of 47.45 on the leadoff, while Jones went toe-to-toe with Kyle Chalmers on the first 50 of the second leg before fading on the second half.
Wales set a new national record with their 3:24.33 tonight, blowing the previous mark of 3:26.58 from the 2022 Commonwealth Games to bits. They finished ahead of New Zealand in the battle for the bronze medal by half a second.
