The four businesses ranged from personalized RNA therapy for rare diseases to utility-scale clean-energy generation, Hawaiian beach bags and hospitality venues.
Hundreds of members of the business community came to Scripps Research in La Jolla on Thursday evening to attend an awards ceremony hosted by the EDC and JPMorganChase.
The four companies and their awards are:
Top Startup — La Jolla Labs, founded in 2022, is a clinical-stage biotechnology company that has built an AI-powered platform for discovering RNA-based therapeutics. One of their experimental therapies has already saved a life.
Heavyweight — SOLV Energy, founded in 2008 and listed on Nasdaq, has built over 500 large solar and battery utility plants producing 21 gigawatts of electricity.
Rising Star — ALOHA Collection, founded in 2014 by college roommates Rachael Leinaʻala Soares and Heather Aiu, designs and sells Hawaiian-theme bags and pouches.
Early Stage Innovator — Snake Oil Venues, founded in 2019, has expanded from boutique cocktail catering to operate hospitality venues throughout the county.
More than 100 nominations from San Diego’s middle-market businesses were reviewed by a 10-person judging committee, with winners selected across the four categories.
