Egyptian media fire and writer Emad Eddin Adib warned that any threat to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait constitutes a direct threat to Egyptian national security.
During his Friday interview on the “al-Hekaya” (The Story) program on MBC Masr, Adib said that closing Bab el-Mandeb would mean that Iran is “dragging Egypt into the conflict.”
This would have severe strategic and economic repercussions for Egypt, primarily impacting Suez Canal revenues.
He added that the Suez Canal generated approximately $ 9.5 billion in revenue, stressing that “the Suez Canal cannot be tampered with.”
Adib called for Arab unity, stressing that no Gulf state should cooperate with Iran against an Arab state or with Israel against an Arab state, as any harm that befalls an Arab state will have repercussions on the rest of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
He reiterated Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s call for a “Unified Arab Command,” launched in 2014, arguing that if Arab armies trained according to a unified system and with standardized weaponry, Arab states would possess a rapid intervention force similar to NATO, capable of addressing crises in the region.
Adib added that the region is witnessing changes due to “two evils” – Iran and Israel – which he believes are creating major crises and rendering the region unsuitable for development.
