A rabies vaccine used in several west suburban clinics was recalled after it was discovered the drug may have diminished potency, officials said on Thursday.
The recalled one-year rabies vaccine was administered at Kane County vaccination clinics between August and October 2025, officials said.
“The recall does not mean an affected pet has rabies or is sick. Rather, testing found that some vaccines may not provide protection for the full 12-month period,” a representative of the Kane County Public Information Office said in a statement.
Some of the one-year vaccinations that were subject to the recall are set to expire next month, officials said, and pet owners are required by Illinois law to maintain a current rabies vaccination.
Kane County Animal Control is offering to revaccinate animals that were given rabies shots last year at their county vaccine clinics in light of the recall. Pet owners whose animals received a shot from one of the recalled lots should receive a letter from county officials explaining the recall and an offer to get a free replacement vaccine.
The revaccinations are free but do require an appointment. Pet owners who receive the recall letter and want to schedule an appointment can contact Kane County Animal Control at 630-232-3555.
