ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A new report released by the Government Accountability Office shines a light on the working poor and reveals that two thirds of adults who rely on federal programs like Medicaid and SNAP worked full-time.
Most worked for private sector employers. Among the employers with the highest number of employees who qualify for federal aid were folks who worked for ride-hailing or food delivery, Walmart, Amazon and McDonald’s.
New analysis done by Clever Real Estate finds that in America, if you make minimum wage, you likely can’t pay the rent. Not if you also want to eat, pay utilities and perhaps make car payments. Rochester is no exception.
Paying for rent in Rochester
Brionna Dunn and her three children live in a 3-bedroom duplex. Even though Dunn is college-educated and works two jobs, money is tight.
Deanna Dewberry, News10NBC: “May I ask how much the rent is?”
Dunn: “1875”
Analysis from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development indicates the fair market value for a 3-bedroom is actually $1,895. Dunn is really struggling.
“It’s difficult. It’s difficult for sure. You really have to budget down to the penny,” Dunn said.
What the experts have to say
Government housing experts recommend that rent be no more than 30% of your gross income. But analysis by Clever Real Estate revealed that minimum wage workers can’t afford rent in any of the country’s largest cities.
In fact, the study finds that in eight cities, five minimum wage workers would have to share a one-bedroom to afford the monthly rent.
“It’s just really hard for people to make ends meet right now — especially if they’re on minimum wage, especially the federal minimum wage which is 7:25,” said Jaime Dunaway-Seale, Clever Real Estate spokesperson.
Twenty states pay minimum wage workers $7.25 an hour. Not surprisingly, these states house the eight cities in which minimum wage workers have the toughest time paying the rent.
Minimum wage in Rochester
While the minimum wage in Rochester is far higher, $16 an hour, Clever’s findings were troubling. A minimum wage worker in Rochester would be $488 short of what they need to make to afford a one-bedroom.
“We found that it would have to be raised by about $10 to $26 an hour,” Dunaway-Seale said.
A wage that would help Dunn, but critics say would cripple the economy. While there are no published records of the number of people making minimum wage in Rochester, about one in four Rochester neighbors live below the federal poverty line.
