"Born on the Bayou" was the first track on Creedence Clearwater Revival's second album, 1969's Bayou Country, and was released as the B-side of the single "Proud Mary" (which peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100). As Fogerty explained in Rolling Stone's 2008 "100 Greatest Guitar Songs" issue (which ranked "Born on the Bayou" #53 on the list), the classic tune was essentially written during a soundcheck at San Francisco's Avalon Ballroom in 1968.
In the book Up Around the Bend, drummer Doug Clifford shared a slightly different version of the song's origin story, placing the soundcheck at Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
As Fogerty recalled in a 1970 interview on the Pop Chronicles, he relied heavily on his imaginative powers to write the lyrics for "Born on the Bayou."
"I put it in the swamp where, of course, I had never lived," Fogerty continued. "It was late as I was writing. I was trying to be a pure writer, no guitar in hand, visualizing and looking at the bare walls of my apartment. Tiny apartments have wonderful bare walls, especially when you can't afford to put anything on them."
According to Fogerty, the line "Chasin' down a hoodoo there" had "mystical" origins.
All these years later, "Born on the Bayou" is still one of CCR's most beloved songs (Clifford called it his personal favorite, per Ultimate Classic Rock). Adding yet another level to the song's legacy: The band opened their iconic Woodstock set with "Born on the Bayou" in 1969.
