Ray Brandes at the Wyld Gooms takes The Tower Bar
Ray Brandes is having quite a year. The past 12 months have seen the release of an anthology of one of his early bands, The Tell Tale Hearts, as well as playing shows around Southern California and touring in Spain with Orange County combo, the Wyld Gooms, and gigging with The Mothmen, who have a new EP pending. On July 24, Brandes and The Wyld Gooms team up for a show at The Tower Bar, celebrating the release of a new 7” single, “Back of the Crowd” b/w “Something Is Wrong.” Individually, Brandes and The Wyld Gooms are great live performers, but when they join forces, things go to another level. Fans of classic 60’s era garage rock will love the new tunes, with the setlist also likely to include several vintage Tell Tale Hearts songs as well. Anyone heading to this show will want to get there early to catch the debut of new band, The Road Runners, and take in sets from DJ Richard Whig and DJ Girlgroupgirl.

Award-winning country singer Kimmi Bitter and her band, The Westside Twang, come to Lou Lou’s on July 24 for a special show celebrating the release of her new album, “Bittersweet,” and new single, “Tremolo.” Bitter will play the songs from her new album front to back, plus a batch of her great singles such as “My Grass Is Blue” and “Aquamarine.” Fans of classic 1960’s era country music, along the lines of Tammy Wynette and Loretta Lynn, will love every second of Bitter’s set, with Lou Lou’s being the perfect venue for Bitter’s vintage-inspired sounds. Opening the show will be Americana based combo, Good Gravy.

Offering up something for just about every musical taste, The Bill Wells Band takes the stage at Point Loma Park on July 24. Featuring guitarist/keyboardist Bill Wells, perhaps best known in the area as the mayor of El Cajon, the group plays a mix of rock, blues, pop and R&B standards, ranging from the 1960’s through to the modern era. The Bill Wells Band offers up a fine soundtrack to a Friday evening in the park.

The biggest rockabilly band of all time, The Stray Cats, comes to The Sound on July 26. Still featuring all three original members, Brian Setzer (guitar), Lee Rocker (bass) and Slim Jim Phantom (drums), the band hasn’t slowed down a bit since their 1979 debut, most recently releasing the well-received album, “40,” in 2019 and continuing to tour worldwide, regularly playing to sold-out crowds. With no new album to promote, fans can rest assured all of The Stray Cats’ classic singles will be in the night’s set list, including “Rock This Town,” “Rumble in Brighton” and “Stray Cat Strut.”

Bruce Springsteen aficionados won’t want to miss an appearance from The Springsteen Experience at Scripps Park on July 26, part of the annual Concerts by the Sea music series. Led by Springsteen doppelganger, Josh Tanner, the Experience recreates a classic concert, with vintage costumes and gear giving the show extra authenticity. This concert will be based around Springsteen’s best-known songs, but expect the biggest response to be for songs such as “Tenth Avenue Freezeout,” which gives the band’s excellent horn section an opportunity to shine.

Reggae favorites, The Dub Squad, perform at Kate Sessions Park on May 30, part of the annual Concerts on the Green music series. It’s no secret that reggae and island sounds are amongst the most popular in the Pacific Beach area, so The Dub Squad is an excellent choice for a Sunday at one of the county’s most scenic parks. The Dub Squad focuses on originals, but throws in a few covers into their sets, including a fun version of Steve Miller’s “The Joker.”

Anyone who appreciates Renaissance and medieval music, circa the 1600’s, will want to catch a set from Courtly Noyse, who perform at The Athenaeum on July 27. Playing period instruments such as recorders, hurdy gurdy, and mandolin, the quintet does a wonderful job of recreating these centuries-old tunes. Founded in 2003, Courtly Noyse has released two albums to date, both well worth hearing, but it’s live where they truly excel, performing a fun show, in full Renaissance garb, that includes a bit of humor to go along with the retro sounds.

Legendary Grateful Dead tribute band, the Dark Star Orchestra, performs at Humphrey’s Concerts by the Bay on July 28. Formed in 1997, the DSO has performed thousands of shows over the past three decades, with a sound so real that most of the members of The Grateful Dead have sat in with the band. The DSO often recreates entire Grateful Dead shows live, but whatever they choose to play on the night will be sure to make the area’s Deadheads very happy.
Dark Star Orchestra: Tuesday, July 28 at Humphrey’s Concerts by the Bay, 2241 Shelter Island Dr., Shelter Island. 6:30 p.m. $76.Jeff Ousley’s Open Mic
There are plenty of open mics and showcases for solo performers, but few such options for the area’s bands. One notable exception is Jeff Ousley’s monthly showcase at Humphrey’s Backstage Live. With bands playing their best material in short sets, local music listeners can take in a cross-section of San Diego’s rising talent and the occasional established artists. This time out, the night includes 90’s era specialists, Hall Pass Radio, Oceanside-based cover band Smokin Ocotillos, classic rock dance group She Says So, and alternative rock and prog-inspired combo, Snakeoil Burlesque. The nod at this show goes to the latter, a long-running group with solid originals such as “A New Road” and an adventurous choice of covers, including songs by the likes of Pink Floyd and Shriekback.
Jeff Ousley’s Live Music Showcase: Thursday, July 30 at Humphrey’s Backstage Live, 2241 Shelter Island Dr., Shelter Island. 6 p.m. $5.Folk icon Tom Rush goes Belly Up
Legendary folk musician Tom Rush, accompanied by guitarist Brendan Cleary, returns to the Belly Up Tavern on July 30. Though he never scored a hit himself, Rush’s music has been covered numerous times. Notably, his song “No Regrets,” now a standard, has been a Top 10 hit in the UK twice, by The Walker Brothers and Midge Ure of Ultravox, with Rush also helping many young artists over his six-decade-long career by covering their songs. At 85, Rush is still going strong, recently releasing the album “Gardens Old, Flowers New.” Folk fans won’t want to miss this concert by one of the founders of the singer-songwriter era. Award-winning troubadour Gregory Page opens the show.
