TROY, N.Y. — New York lawmakers are calling for a two-year delay in shifting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) costs to states and counties as federal funding cuts are set to take effect soon.

Speaking in Troy Monday, Senator Chuck Schumer warned that without action in the new farm bill, counties could face millions in additional costs and may have to raise taxes or cut food assistance.

According to a New York State report released last July, more than 100,000 people rely on SNAP in Monroe County.

Republicans defend the changes as a taxpayer-protection measure, saying states must do more to reduce payment errors and improve oversight.
