The first single from the 1982 album Cut, "Twilight Zone" became the Dutch band’s second international hit—and by far their most successful. But the song was cut way down for a radio edit, and its music video was also edited by MTV.
Golden Earring vocalist Barry Hay once revealed he knew the song would be big from the jump.
The edited version of “Twilight Zone” became Golden Earring’s biggest U.S. hit, soaring to No. 1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart in February 1983 and peaking at No. 10 on the Hot 100.
“What MTV did in those days was to cut up everything that was a little bit strange,” Hay recalled to Classic Rock Music Writer. “We were in the top ten of video clips that got mutilated. ‘Twilight Zone’ also got mutilated and at the end it was like a really dreary affair. We just got pissed off and said f--- this s---. Then we just concentrated on Holland, Germany, Belgium … and so that was it.”
More than 40 years after its release, "Twilight Zone" is still remembered by fans as an iconic anthem of the early 1980s.
