1988 Afternoon Jam Session, Meant to Be Just a B-Side, Accidentally Became the Greatest Supergroup in Rock History ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

There was no studio booked, so Harrison called Bob Dylan, who offered up his garage studio in Malibu. On the way there, Harrison stopped at Petty's house to collect his forgotten guitar and figured he might as well bring him along too. Just like that, five of the most celebrated musicians of the twentieth century were in the same room with no plan, no contract, and no expectation of what was about to happen.

What happened in Dylan's Malibu garage was the opposite of every other supergroup that had come before them.

Petty also described watching Dylan build a song at the kitchen table as one of the most eye-opening experiences of his musical life. "There's nobody I've ever met who knows more about the craft of how to put a song together than he does," he said. "He'll write lots and lots of verses, then he'll say, 'this verse is better than that.' Slowly, this great picture emerges."

Even their drummer got a Wilbury name. Legendary session drummer Jim Keltner became Buster Sidebury, the only non-brother to appear in almost every piece of Wilbury media.

In 1990, they won the Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group. Just a band with fake names that formed in an afternoon and never toured won a Grammy.

Five Legends. Two Albums. Three Gone.

Roy Orbison died on December 6, 1988, just two months after Vol. 1 was released. He never heard the world's reaction to what they'd made together. When the surviving four recorded Vol. 3 in 1990, they changed their Wilbury names; Harrison became Spike, Dylan became Boo, Petty became Muddy, and Lynne became Clayton. New brothers for a band that had lost its most irreplaceable voice.

George Harrison died on November 29, 2001. Tom Petty died on October 2, 2017.

Three of the five are gone. The band that formed by accident in an afternoon, that never played a concert, that adopted fake names and recorded in a Malibu garage, has outlasted most of the musicians of that era.

George Harrison just needed a B-side before dinner.
