Giant Eagle owns 197 supermarkets across northern Ohio, western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, and Indiana. Earlier this month, the company announced plans to sell all of the locations to Kroger for $1.65 billion.
Customers from local Pittsburgh stores seemed confused about Trump’s announcement, writing comments on Reddit such as, “He’s good at just taking credit for everything good”, “Did someone just hand him a weekly sales flyer?” and “Just an FYI. Giant Eagle price lock/everyday savings is not a new thing, not a price reduction per se. Every quarter, they rotate featured products they believe will highlight good prices on everyday items…Every grocery store does something like this.”
In September of 2025, the retailer released this statement: “Giant Eagle lowers prices on key grocery staples through the end of 2025. Prices on more than 300 items across 29 product categories will be reduced by an average of 17 percent.”
