Released in August 1982 as the second single from their second studio album, After the Snow, "I Melt with You" became an instant fan favorite. The track was put on heavy rotation on MTV, first propelling it into the mainstream's focus. In 1983, it was featured in Nicolas Cage's romantic comedy film Valley Girl, which served as the catalyst that pushed it onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song ended up peaking at No. 78, becoming their first breakthrough hit.
Several years later in 1990, Modern English re-recorded the song for their fifth record, Pillow Lips. The newer version also had the momentum to climb the Hot 100, peaking at No. 76 and marking the highest-charting single of their career.

Writing "I Melt with You"
“I was definitely stoned when I wrote it,” said Grey. “It was during the day, I remember it really well. I sat down on the floor of my flat in London, a cheap place in the housing association, and wrote the verse just straight off in about 10 minutes.”
“He put them all in an order, and that’s how the musical side of it came about with the lyrics,” Grey reflected. “I wrote the words, but I never actually stood next to a mic and talked into it before. I always shouted into a mic. He showed me how to stand in front of a microphone and just talk into it, so that’s how you get that almost spoken word thing, which is what I think is kind of the charm of it, I suppose.”
