NEW YORK STATE — New York will issue about two million new chip-enabled EBT cards for SNAP recipients beginning early next year to help prevent benefit theft.
The new cards will use chip technology to make it harder for thieves to steal account information through skimming devices. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said the upgrade is aimed at protecting those most vulnerable.
“We are committed to protecting New Yorkers from benefit theft and modernizing our EBT system is the most effective tool we have to prevent heartless criminals from preying on some of our most vulnerable residents,” Governor Hochul said.
Retailers are advised to update payment devices by December 1 to accept the new tap-to-pay cards. The funding for this transition was included in Gov. Hochul’s 2027 budget.
